“Summer, the period where it is too warm to do what was too cold to do in Winter”
Mark Twain

Plant your brassicas (kale, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli) deeper, just below first leaves for stronger plants and stronger roots. The same can be done with tomato plants, even up to the 2nd leaf!

June is not too late to plant summer flowering bulbs!

Plant these flowers in your vegetable bed to keep critters away:

Marigolds:                  aphids and rabbits

Alliums:                      aphids, snails, and flies

Chrysanthemum:       spider mites and ants

Nasturtium:                whitefly, ants, beetles, and caterpillars

Petunias:                     aphids, beetles, and caterpillars

  • Warm humid weather can produce mildew in leaves of fruit trees; pinch out affected leaves and dispose in garbage before it spreads to other part of the trees.
  • Pinch tops in dahlias to encourage strong growth and more blooms. Dahlia bulbs can still be planted now until mid-June.
  • Keep birds and bunnies out of strawberry beds by using chicken wire as a “tunnel like” cover over plants. Use dry leaf, straw, or grass mulch to keep berries clean.
  • Basil plants can live outside on deck or in a sunny sheltered garden spot.
  • Bean time! Soil is warm enough to plant all kinds of beans. Early Spring planted broad beans can be harvested now.
  • Too late to support the peonies since most of them are out now and hopefully you have picked them before the deluge last weekend!
  • Roses have no thorns!! They have prickles or spines! Plants like, Hawthorn, Pyracantha, Blackberry and Locusts have thorns. Thorns do not break off easily and are modified stems obtained from shoots on branches.
